Lawrence Rayburn Mitchell
December 10, 1953 – September 28, 2026
Lawrence Rayburn Mitchell, age 72, passed away on September 28, 2026. Born on December 10, 1953, Rayburn lived a life filled with creativity, hard work, laughter, faith, and a deep love for his family and friends. He was a man of many talents, a gifted craftsman, and someone who never met a stranger.
Rayburn began his working career with a brief time in the bakery business, followed by a position as a bank teller. However, it wasn't long before he discovered his true passion and calling in automotive bodywork and painting. After working for a short time at Simmons, he continued developing his skills at Ollen Sanders Body Shop in Dora, Alabama. With the help and encouragement of his father, Lawrence, Rayburn eventually opened his own body shop, which he successfully operated for many years.
Blessed with remarkable artistic talent and an eye for detail, Rayburn took great pride in his custom automotive painting and bodywork. His craftsmanship earned him numerous awards at car shows, where his work was admired and recognized. His love for automobiles extended beyond the paint shop, as he also enjoyed the excitement of drag racing.
After many years in the automotive industry, Rayburn transitioned his talents into residential and commercial painting. His creativity and craftsmanship knew no bounds. He also worked alongside his father in custom cabinetry, becoming a skilled carpenter in his own right. One of his proud accomplishments was helping his father, uncle, and brother-in-law restore a home in Atlanta, Georgia. Their exceptional craftsmanship was recognized with a restoration award.
Outside of his work, Rayburn had a zest for life and enjoyed a variety of hobbies. He loved to dance and never missed an opportunity to show off his moves. He was also an avid billiards player who especially enjoyed competing in tournaments against others who shared his competitive spirit. Fishing with his father and friends was another favorite pastime, providing opportunities to make memories and enjoy time together.
Above all, Rayburn was incredibly proud of his children and grandchildren. They were among his greatest joys, and he never missed an opportunity to share stories about each and every one of them. Anyone willing to listen could expect a lengthy conversation filled with love, pride, and admiration for his family.
Perhaps one of Rayburn's greatest gifts was his ability to connect with people. He truly never met a stranger. Whether sharing a story, striking up a conversation, or making someone laugh, Rayburn had a way of turning an ordinary encounter into a lasting friendship. He loved to talk, and those who knew him will forever remember his stories, his outgoing personality, and his genuine enjoyment of being around others.
Most importantly, Rayburn's life was grounded in his faith in Jesus Christ. He made the decision to give his life to the Lord and believed wholeheartedly in the power of prayer and the saving grace of Jesus Christ. His faith was an important part of who he was and remains a comforting reminder of the hope and promise found in God's love.
Rayburn was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ruth Mitchell Lockhart; his stepmother, Dianne White Mitchell; and his brother, Chris Mitchell.
He leaves behind his loving children, Jeremy Brady Mitchell (Jessica), Katelynn Johnson (Austin), and Ashley McIntyre (Glenn); one grandson and five granddaughters, who will forever cherish his memory.
Rayburn is also survived by his father, Lawrence Olten Mitchell; his sisters, Sandy White (Larry) and Kathy Allen (Mike); his stepbrother, Shannon "Barney" White (Melanie); and his stepsisters, Cindy White Dodd and Tammy "Peggy" White. He also leaves behind extended family members, dear friends, and countless others whose lives were touched by his friendship and kindness.
A Celebration of Life honoring Lawrence Rayburn Mitchell will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at Dora Church of God. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance of a life filled with love, laughter, faith, and cherished memories.
