David Owen Sargent, age 80, of Cordova, Alabama, passed away at his residence on Sunday, May 10, 2026, surrounded by his family.
David spent his career as a coal miner/electrician, working both underground and above ground. He was hardworking, intelligent, generous, and devoted to his family. He had a gift for making people smile, often through a well-timed joke or one of his unforgettable stories. David was a member of Eastside Baptist Church in Jasper, Alabama. His family was one of the great joys of his life, and he loved them deeply.
David is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Jean Sargent; his sons, David "Butch" Sargent and his wife, Tammy D., and Doug Sargent and his wife, Gina; his daughter, Deb Sargent Bankston; his grandchildren, Nichole Bankston Woods and her husband, Nathan, Abby Sargent McDonald and her husband, Dylan, Owen Sargent, and Olivia Sargent; his great-granddaughters, Harper Grace Woods and Avery Parker McDonald; his sister, Brenda Sargent Maloy and her husband, Rodney; his sisters-in-law, Joanne Sargent and Sheila Sargent; cherished family member, Tammy R. Sargent; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Owen J., and Norma K. Sargent; his sister, Shirley Sargent; his brothers, Don R. Sargent and Danny Joe Sargent, Sr.; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Pearson and Betty Green; and his sister-in-law, Linda Green Turner.
Visitation for friends will be held Monday, May 18, 2026, from 12:30 p.m. until 1:30 p.m. at Bell Funeral Home Chapel, 510 Main Street, Sumiton, Alabama. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Shanghi Cemetery, adjacent to Shanghi Baptist Church, 6915 Sharon Boulevard, Quinton, Alabama. Brother Jeff Allred will officiate.
